How to pack without paying baggage fees

Did you know that you can save up to £60 on your flight by packing light and only taking a backpack that fits under the seat in front?

All passengers are entitled to bring 1 small personal bag on board which must fit under the seat in front of you (40cm x 20cm x 25cm). Examples include, handbag, laptop bag and small backpack. This can vary from airline to airline so check with who are you flying with, the above measurements are applicable to Ryanair.

Most people get quite confused about these rules however when booking online Ryanair and EasyJet are VERY clear about their requirements. If you can wear it as a backpack chances are you'll be fine but if you're worried, then purchase your bag from Cabin Max where you will be able to search by airline.

Liquids carried must be in a container of no more than 100ml All liquids should be carried in a single, transparent, re-sealable plastic bag of up to 20cm x 20cm with a total capacity of up to ten items. You must be able to completely close the bag and be able to fit it in your hand baggage. I use these ones as I can use them over and over again.

How many times have you been away on holiday and brought a pile of clothes home that are unworn? To travel light you have to get realistic, how much stuff do you REALLY need for a few days? Plan out your outfits and any bulky items such as hoodies and coats make sure you wear on the plane.

Think about why you're doing this trip? Is it to see some amazing places or are you going on a fashion shoot....

Most consumer personal electronic devices containing batteries are allowed in carry-on and checked baggage, including but not limited to, smart phones, data loggers, PDAs , electronic games, tablets, laptop computers, cameras, camcorders, watches, calculators, etc.

Top tips for packing

  • Don't buy travel sized toiletries, they are double the price of normal sized products, instead when you get to the airport buy your full size normal deodorant , shower gel, sun cream etc in the duty free area, this is always cheaper than getting the travel size, if you don't use it all simply leave it behind. Alternatively you can buy clear transparent empty bottles and fill them up with your usual products at home. This is slightly harder for deodrant if you use a spray but it is still much cheaper buying a full size normal one at the airport, or get a roll on instead!

  • Roll your clothes into sausages rather than fold, this always seems to work better in my opinion.

  • Packing for colder climates is more difficult as the clothes are bulkier so wear any bulky items while you travel and layer up, the more you carry on you, the less you need to squeeze into your rucksack.

  • Pack a plastic bag, this comes in really handy when you want to keep your dirty clothes and clean clothes separate in your backpack.

Typical amount for 2 days/3 nights

One of the main questions I get asked is how I travel so light, first of all you need to think about how many times you have been away on a holiday and brought back loads of clean clothes that you haven't even worn???

I obviously find packing for colder trips more difficult as winter clothes take up a lot more room but you can easily layer up and maybe wear a hoodie and put another one round your waist to save room!

The picture here shows everything I took to Norway, I also had room for half of the food that you can see on the image below (me and JP split that between bags) the Cabin Max Bags are really good and fit absolutely loads in.

I always take swimwear even if I have no swimming planned as it is always handy to have with me for any unplanned adventures, I also absolutely have to have my Yorkshire Tea with me!

If I was going for any longer I would simply add in extra underwear, extra T shirts and maybe an extra hoodie and that's it!

Take some food

Some countries can be quite expensive, especially the scanvndaian ones like Iceland Norway however it is possible to still do them on a budget by taking some tasty snacks with you...mmmm Bombay Badboy

This not only saved us money but put our mind as rest when we were far from any shops.

Even though we only usually have under seat bags we still have plenty of room for this little haul and while more expensive you can also buy extras from duty free once you're through security as these bags are also permitted as cabin baggage.

(Top cheeky tip, I have been known to take duty free bags home with me and actually use them for extra clothes as cabin crew just think it's your duty free) ooohhhhh Rebecca!
